Boxes Beware

I like Matt Degnan’s design language, and the Steller's build quality and materials represent good value for money.

The Steller’s handle is probably going to generate most of the discussion about the knife. It is an unapologetic three finger handle, on which the little finger is simply along for the ride. This presents no problems for using the knife comfortably, or safely. The Steller locks in between your thumb and first two fingers and isn’t going anywhere. As a result of this forward focused grip, there is almost no chance that the Steller is going to dig into your palm. The pocket clip will only cause a hot-spot if you try to hold on with your little finger, which is unnecessary.

The blade is lovely and thin and well ground. I would call the blade a Wharncliffe rather than a Sheepsfoot, but what it is called doesn’t alter the fact that it cuts well. It is not the most usable blade shape in the world, but it is very good for getting point first into things.

After I unpacked my Steller, I felt compelled to use it to demolish all of the other parcels that arrived today, as well as every box I could find that needed to be broken down for recycling. Some knives have a “look at me” vibe, whereas the Steller has a “put me to work” vibe. I would be surprised if you don’t feel the same when your Steller arrives. Get cutting as soon as you can after it arrives, and you will soon make friends with the three finger handle.
